There is one(two counting HoF) staff in the game that is one-handed. It's available right at the end of the Prologue.

OKie. Of the three last guys from the Prologue, the mage, Caballus, drops the Whispering Staff. It is a +1 one.handed staff with a chance to silence target. Deals 1d6 bludgeoning.

ok, so the onehanded staff + a bastard sword (not shure: is it 1 or 2handed?) should do the work!!!

Aragorn should have a nice, huge, 2handed sword;

Gimli some axes;

Legolas a nice composite bow (I think later in the game you find a real-cool fast bow) and two daggers;

Sam a short sword;

Frodo another short sword...
