My party, no matter what the game, has always consisted of a couple of fighters, a thief, a priest, and a sorcerer (if available), thus leaving space for one, slightly less boring character (boring only in the familiar sense. You call my sorc boring, you get FRIED), ie. a bard, a monk, a kensai (BG2) etc

So by less boring you mean more... exotic.
Anyway, make your own party. All the words on this page are just advice from seasoned veterans, but this game, like every RPG, encourages new thought, and I stand by the idea. Wether it be a party of complete misfits, melee fighters, or a witche's coven keep it original. Make your first effective party reflect you.
