GS goes down alot but lately it's been insane - never working properly, rooms not appearing. ppl not getting into games etc.
Hmm... than maybe the problem isn't gamespy after all. I guess I can just try to directly connect using their ip's, although I don't think that will help.

Redblueflare,

What operating system are you running? A friend tried connecting to a mplayer game we were playing today and she had NO luck. She was running Win XP home edition.

I'm running windows 98 so that's not the problem unfortunately. :(

Ok, for ping you should have seen something like this ...

C:\>
The failure suggests you used an invalid IP or a host name (host.somedomain.something) that could not be resolved. Check you friends address. Use the IP number if possible. Your friend may need to configure his FW to allow incoming connections. He will have to give you his PUBLIC IP - the one reported to the world by his FW, not the one his computer says it is using.
This is not IWD II, it's merely a network thing.

*cough* I take back what I said before about that *not* working. The fact is i input the command. Ping *ip address* and apparently was drunk at the time and didn't realize I was supposed to put in the number, and not the word *ip address* Any other ideas?

nope, get your friends public IP address then direct connect. I avoid gamespy usually.

I'll be damned if that still didn't work! Please tell me someone knows what's wrong now?

ok stumped at this point

it would really help if you listed each troubleshooting step and the result you AND your friend have taken, otherwise I can't be sure of what is going on

to clarify, have both of you disabled your FWs?

Can you both ping each other?

are you both using PUBLIC ip's and not private ones? (privates have the form of 10.x.x.x or 167.x.x.x or 192.168.x.x)

can your friend direct connect to you?

if the answer is no to any of these ?s then it is a network issue or a FW issue. If not, then it's the game and I can't help anymore. Try emailing the results of your testing to Interplay. They can hopefully help more.

Redblueflare;

Try Nightstalked's suggestion and have your friend try connecting to YOU, or try switching the host machine to another player.

If you want, I would be happy to set up a test run tomorrow (Sunday) or Monday evening sometime and you can try connecting to my machine or we could try the reverse. I am POSITIVE that I am not behind any firewalls, and have had NO trouble connecting to other machines (I run under Win 98 SE). Send me a PM.

PS: I'm in New Orleans so the ping rate should be good and the time zones are close.

Redblueflare 11-30-2002 10:06 PM

we can both ping each other. So that can't be it. *sigh* I'm not sure exactly what it is though. I suppose i'll fool around with the FW a little more. I'm *postitive* the problem lies with that. I'd take you up on your offer Micah, but my friends offered to help out first. Don't want to waste your time.
