You are playing multi-player right? Just go to the screen where you can export your characters, export under another name. Then re-load the game. You will get to the panel where you are approving/acknowledging the characters - delete the guy with the ugly handle. Use create character, then import character. When you do that you will be able to pick a new name for the guy or gal you are importing.
