Ok, taking into account that I want to mainly play a thief and not a warrior, here's my plan: Figher to level 6 to get high mastery (4 stars) in a weapon, dual to Thief and finish BG1, convert to BG2 and put 5 stars in a weapon skill to get grand mastery. This is basically what Lemernis originally suggested. This will give me a powerful thief character to play with through most of my BG saga. Thanks Lemernis and Darkman and everyone else for their input.
