Sorry. I guess I was a bit vague. After picking up Imoen, you have to pass through the underground city (as well as various other parts of the game), which I'm assuming is what he's talking about (Ust Natha). You have to pass through Ust Natha before going to the Sewers. Ergo, since he's doing the missions in Ust Natha, he can't be going into the Sewers to be squished by Mind Flayers.

Or maybe I should've just said:

"But you can't go into the Sewers with Imoen before passing through the underground city, which he said is the part he's going through now..."

Furthermore, his spellcasting thing was greyed out. Which could be accounted for if he got Int drained and use the last few spells in his spellbook. All well and good, except he rested, which should serve to both remove the Int drain as well as recharge all of his spells.

To the OP: Did you use any gear that you didn't ID and potentially was cursed?

Ah, ok, now I get it, and agree. But for the record, having one's Intelligence drained through Mind Flayer hits does absolutely nothing to affect one's spellcasting abilities.
