Xan!!!

I've heard someone contemplated modding him into the game though.

Xan is the cutest!

Certain other NPCs are back, just under a different name. Quick, name me 5 notable differences between Kagain and Korgan. Or compare the stats of Ajantis and Keldorn.

BG2 doesn't need more NPCs from BG1 as much as it needs more NPCs, period. A list of what you could have had, but don't have:
Archer
Swashbuckler
Kensai
Monk
Priest of Lathander
Wild Mage (with ToB)
Avenger
Cavalier
Jester
Barbarian
Priest of Talos
Assassin
Sorcerer
Beast Master
Skald
Undead Hunter
Totemic Druid
Priest of Helm (even though Anomen clearly should be one)
Wizard Slayer
Half-Orcs? Where are the Half-Orcs?

That makes 19 classes and kits that were neglected--25, if you count the other Mage kits as well. 25 that were left out, and only 17 that were left IN. Considering that the flexibility of party makeup is what primarily drives the game's replayability, BioWare pretty much shot itself in the foot by not providing more NPCs.

Six, what really makes you think they're going to stop making more NPC's or mods to create more? I've seen more mods for this game than I've got fingers and toes so I know there's going to end up being dozens of more guys for you to recruit.

I will admit that it sucks than BG2 killed off some of the better guys from BG1 though, another reason why everyone hates Irenicus

as someone pointed out earlier it is a shame one could not have had a choice on what npcs were brought over for use in BG2. I realize that would have greatly complicated the game however.

I miss Branwen. I dont miss Dynaheir - I usely let her get smoked shortly after her liberation

(wonders how many fingers and toes Gangrell has) :D

I, actually, have been considering MODding in Xan, as a Focus Enchanter. (My Big Plan includes a Wizard MOD, which would add things like Focus Mages and Tougher Familiars.) I've always loved Xan's personality, he'd be the only true Elf in the game (1 Avariel, 1 Half-Elf, 2 Drow and a Tiefling), so Chapter 7 would be a big homecoming for him, and hey--he can Dual-wield Moonblades! Nifty! Also, his being an Enchanter could really be fun in certain conversations, such as your arrival in Trademeet:

Militia Guard- Hold! You have my thanks for helping us out with those creatures, but what with the Druid attacks we're not letting anyone into the city without questioning. Let's see some identification.
Xan- You don't need to see our identification.
Militia Guard- We don't need to see your identification.
Xan- These aren't the Druids that you're looking for.
Militia Guard- These aren't the Druids that we're looking for.
Xan- < PRO_HESHE > can go about < PRO_HISHER > business.
Militia Guard- You can go about your business.
Xan- Move along.
Militia Guard- Move along. Move along!

LOL @ your post Six! Now *that* would be cool! BTW: IIRC there is not an option in the game to say to Minsc: "aren't you dead", right? Because when you tell him to stuff his little Dynaheir-saving quest up his hairy *** he turns hostile, and attacks you. Of course you have to kill him then... Kinda weird, IMHO.

lol...I miss Xan.

"we're all doomed!"
"Life is so hollow"
"Our Quest is vain!"
:D

"The sun shines, and I am amazed that we live to see another day."
"The bustle of the city makes me feel insignificant."
"The majesty of the forest makes me feel....insignificant."
"Onward....(to futility.)"
"Whatever!"
"I'll do what I can.....(but expect very little.)"

The problem, of course, is that it is not like each NPC adds a few dialog options -- ideally each new NPC should have at least one interaction with each existing NPC, and as anyone who has ever supervised three kids can attest, the interaction is often/usually different than any two of them alone. Not to mention that very few people would ever put together a party to see what kind of interactions there might be. Heck, few people take up H'D now, so that represents a whole lot of time basically wasted there scripting out the lively repartee between him and Vic...

The solution is at least a couple generations of RPGs away -- a crude AI system that generates dialog consistent with a particular personality, and can respond. In order to be realistic, it has to include all kinds of kidding, sarcasm, humor, innuendo, etc. Even the scripted romance dialogs can't handle a bit of humor, as if you say the "wrong" thing once, that's it.

Regarding BG1 characters, Kivan was a very nice character, but not very good to have to listen to on a gloomy day, cold rain soaking through to the skin, oilcloth only doing a marginally passable job of protecting your armor and weapons from rust. I did one game with Kivan, and that was enough gloom for me...
