I thought you could cast all the divine(priest) spells you want even in the city. the coweleds only come when you cast arcane(mage) spells within the city(unless you pay the five grand of course).

Two things.
Protection from negative plane protection is clerical and wouldn't set the Cowled Wizards after you. Laying traps. If your thief lays traps in the city streets to snag the cowled wizards, any chance an innocent goes over one and gets killed? I assume that would be a reputation hit. |

Da Rules:
To attract the attention of the Cowled Wizards, you must cast a Wizard spell outdoors in Athkatla. (For some reason, the Graveyard District does not count as being part of the city.) Non-spells that will still attract Cowls are: Casting spells from scrolls, casting spells via non-Quickslot items (the Thieves' Hood is an example of a non-Quickslot item), and perhaps certain Special Abilities. There may be more. Your first violation will get you a warning. On your next violation, 4 Cowled Wizards will attack you. After defeating them, you have a grace period of a few hours or so: You can cast all the Wizard spells you want during that period, and the Cowls won't mind. Subsequent violations result in identical attacks by identical Cowls, with the same grace period. After about 4 or 5 of these little tussles, the next group will include a Female Cowled Wizard, who claims to be of high rank among the Cowls. Kill her, and they finally wise up & leave you alone. Killing these Cowled Wizards will not hurt your Reputation. Traps will only harm creatures that are Hostile to you--the only way you can turn an Innocent creature Hostile to you is to commit a crime in its line of sight (such as harming another Innocent, stealing from someone's home, or getting caught Pickpocketing). |
*cough* Mob Battles, if you really want that feeling of, "The Whole Damn World Is Against Me".
Install the "Improved Random Encounters" from the Tactics Mod. Kill all the Cowled Wizard Enforcers except for the last batch. Flip off Bodhi and polish off all the Vampire Encounters except the last one. Enter Windspear Hills, but do not finish the quest. Get Rock-Bottom Reputation, aka 1. Enter the Bridge District at night and make your way to the center, you will encounter a Mugger who demands your money or your life. Show him who's boss and watch in amazement as a crew of people appear( Bounty Hunter, Wizard Slayer, etc... from the Tactics Mod), cast a spell to trigger the High Council of the Cowled Wizards to appear, 3 Vampires will appear to suck the life out of you, 5 Paladins will come to exact vengance for what happened in Windspear Hills, and Amish Guards will arrive to deal with you, a being of evil repute. Have fun massarcing all of them. |

Improved random encounters can be a biatch. Normally CWs don't pose any threat at all unless they get really lucky. Throw in a bunch of random encounter enemies and you've got a small army to front up to. A long, hard slog that requires no small amount of careful planning and luck (though careful planning, done right, nullifies luck). I've never had paladins after me in an encounter like that, but after leaving the underdark, i went back to the promenade and got bailed up by my favourite character, the insane githyanki. Add a handful of CWs and a wandering party of priests and whatnot (who really ought to know better), shake it up a bit and you've got as chaotic a battlefield as you're likely to get in Athkatla. Unless, of course, a group of angry paladins should wander in. After many reloads, i finally got to keep my silver blade (and the anti-paladin weapon which is useless to me anyway.)
And yes, Baros, it is dispiriting to watch your frame rate drop down to snail speed. As bad as it was in this encounter though, i found the improved mind flayer hive to much more detrimental to the cpu performance. [ 01-12-2003, 04:24 AM: Message edited by: Sever ] |
