Sort of unrelated question. But do sling stones deal missile or crushing damage? I've always wanted to solo an Archer, but the fact that quite a few enemies are immune to missile damage has put me off.

All deals missile damage. ;)
There is some arrows, however, which deals out more than only missile damage.

Solo Archers can use melee weapons, too.

Indeed, as Sir Exxon pointed out, bullets deal missile damage. Still, a Halfling Archer with a sling is a very powerful character.

I've always found that using MMM on the wraith takes too long.
The only way to hit him with them, is by using TS .. during regular time a mage wont be able to hit the wraith very often, even with the bonusses MMM get you. I had to use 2 x 20 energy blades to get him to near death I think, he wasnt dead yet .. and energy blades deal a WHOLE lot more damage than MMM.

Anywayz, maybe I'm wrong and Alson's already succeeded in bringing the wraith down with MMM, but I never managed to do it (only tried once though ) .

Drewal, if all fails against the Wraith, don't be afraid to pull the infamous "Time Stop -> Shapeshift: Mind Flayer" trick out of the sleeve. Extreme situations call for extreme measures. ;)

Thanks Alson for all of the advice - I have managed to get a handle on the first round.

Prior to opening door I cast all protective and buffing spells, and summon three skeleton warriors and two mordekainen's swords.

Open door.

Time Stop. Improved Alacrity.

Hit the Dragon of Pride with three lower resistances (or two lower resistances and one pierce magic).

Cast Abi Dalzhim's at Dragon.

Walk over and pick up the cloak - put it back on - begin casting second time stop.

Time starts. Time stops. Cast Improved Alacrity.

Hit the Dragon of Pride with ten magic missiles and two skull traps.

Walk to north.

Hit Sword of Greed with an Abi Dalzhim.

Cast time stop.

Another Abi Dalzhim's on sword.

Time Stop. Energy Blades. Hit Wraith and then another time stop (scroll this time). Energy blades. Hit wraith. If time permits throw a spell trigger full of pierce magic at Beholder.

Time starts. Run into corner, cast limited wish, ask for control over time. Time stops.

Hit Beholder with Abi Dalzhim's and Skull traps.

Time starts.

Use seocnd spell trigger filled with webs. Hit Irenicus with the webs. Cast Incendiary cloud. Another web. Another Incendiary cloud.

Then I keep casting web to keep Irenicus from moving and or shadow dooring away. (memorized nine webs)

That finishes the first round - I use various summons throughout the process.

Second round - my slayer kills his slayer - and the poor little shadows.

Third round - no more spells, all the summons are gone - I'm SOL. Can't figure out what to do at this point - I am going to try skimping on one time stop in the first round for an extra incendiary cloud, a fallen planetar, or a shapechange spell to save for the final round.

remember that the poor guy doesnt have a lot of true sight's and such memorized ... going invisible buys you time.
Im not sure if he has none or just a few ... you'll have to ask Dundee, he discovered it ( ...big surprise ... ) ;)

drewal 01-01-2003 04:28 PM

I appreciate the suggestion, but my problem does not lie in dying before I can take the third Irenicus down, but in damaging him enough to kill him. He must have an enormous number of protection from magical weapons memorized - or uses it as an innate ability.

I have tried running around hitting him with the sling of everard - pumelling him with the rod of terror - beating on him with the staff of rhynn - and finally, when frustration set in, punching him with my bare fists - all to no avail.

He can't hurt me either - my staff of magi spell trap, stoneskins and -7/-8 armour class depending on items keeps me out of harm's way - it is just an eternal standoff.

I am going to try the ring of the ram next.

Let time start momentarily so the lower resistances hti dragon.
Time stop, improved alacrity, blast the Dragon with 10 magic missiles and one Abi Dalzhim's.
Find the sword, blast it with two Abi Dalzhim's.
Time Stop, Improved Alacrity
Hit Beholder with pierce magic and two lower resistances, then shot my spell trigger loaded with three animate dead spells at him.
Time starts. Planar and 3 Skeleton Warriors make short work of Behodler, I begin to run away from Wraith, summong Mordies as fast as I can.
My summons seem to run out of steam with the Wraith - never killed him - and eventually something happens and I take 80% of my hit points in damage, and then I die. I not sure what, as the dialogue box disappears.

3 Time Stop, 3 Improved Alacrity and 1 Summon Planater?!
Your Necromancer has 7 9th level slots, or have you forgot to add "Wish -> Rest" somewhere in here?
Maybe he's using extended, high-level spell tables? I view it as a tweak rather than a cheat

drewal 01-01-2003 04:47 PM

I am indeed using the extended spell tables - and have nine level nine spells. Four time stops - three improved alacrities - two energy blades.

I memorize three improved alacrities because I am actually casting six time stops during the first round of battle - four memorized, one scroll, one from the limited wish one-time option "control over time."

I have found the two energy blades to be necessary to take down the wraith. I might be able to drop one time stop and do with five in the first round and pick up shapechange or dragon's breath.
