Further explanation.
When somebody tries to hit a target, computer rolls a 20-sided dice (d20) in order to determine whether the attack is successful or not.
Natural roll (before modifiers) of 1 always misses, and attacker needs more time to recover from the miss, and natural roll of 20 (and 19 in some cases) always hits, doing double damage.
THAC0 and AC are better if lower.

ok im begginin to get a better idea on what it does but i have another question then.....a bastard sword.....i think it says the damage is 2D4....what does that mean same goes for a dagger that does 1D4

1d4 mean one 4 sided dice. That mean 1-4
2d4 mean 2-8
1d8 mean 1-8
2d8 mean 2-16
...

Check your BG2 folder for the file "Baldur's gate 2 manual.pdf". It is readable by Acrobat Reader. Read it thoroughly.

damn, was i pissed when i discovered virtually everything in BG1 has an AC of about 0.....
really pissed.
