My love of Bards comes from playing PnP. The Bard or the Druid was always my favorite classes.
The Bard was always the fallback guy. When the crap hit the fan, folks always fell back and depended on me and my crazy ideas, and, my crazy Bards. It's a pity in CRPGs that Bards can't really act. With enough charisma and various skills such as Lying (Yes, that's a skill) a Bard could do amazing things. Sweet talk his (or her) way past nasty fights, convince enemies they were turncoats looking to aid their cause, etc, and then really do some serious backstabbing that even the thief in the party would envy. I can remember PnP games where my Bards did things like talking a large ancient green dragon out of eating him. He was a half elf, elven half was Wilder Elf, probably tough, stringy, and gamey. Ancient green dragon had very few teeth left, and, after a few rolls to check how well I was doing, dragon decided that I was not worth the effort of gumming. Instead, for safe passage, we managed to make a deal where I bring the dragon several large bags of sugar and oatmeal. (He was old, oatmeal went down easy in his human form) Or playing a large group of bandits and the local barony against each other, making each side pay a bit more to betray the other. In the end, there was a huge war, with the Bard and the party being the victors. The Fighter in the group got to take over the Barony's keep, but the Bard got what he wanted. Obcene amounts of gold. Even in CRPGs though, Bards can be role played a bit, and, can be lots of fun. Always ask what the reward is, and, make sure you get as much gold as your greedy little pick pockety fingers can grab. |
