Cloudkill isn't always 100% effective against the Umbre Hulks. If you have Lilacor, equip it on a character who can use 2-handed swords (Minsc or Keldorn) and use them to lure the surviving umbre hulks out one-by-one. Lilacor will prevent them from the Confusion attack of the hulks.

Actually, it is. ;)

It just takes a round (sometimes) for the SLAY effect of the Cloudkill spell to trigger.

What about the good, ol' fashioned hack -n slash technique? Especially if your characters have decent magic resistance (like Liarcor in hand).

Unfortunately, that is not the case. I have had Umber Hulks survive my Cloudkills before, and they most definitely were still alive several rounds later( as indicated in the dialogue window as they take damage).

Sure, it only happens like 1% of the time, what with their atrocious saves, but it can and has happened.

What you describe, Sazerac and Dundee, is a known BG2 issue...
BUG. ;)

Umber Hulks are supposed to be slain by the Cloudkill spell.
But it is interesting, nevertheless - i've yet to see it in my games.
Do you guys remember what specific Umber Hulks were they?

Bug? Why is it a bug? Umber Hulks have less than 5 HitDice? I find that hard to swallow.

Creatures with 5-6 HitDice get to save against the spell. This is more credible for the Umber Hulks. They must roll 18-20 on a d20 to live, so they only got a 15% chance of success. This is accurate as far as I can observe in the game.

I have absolutely no idea about the Umber Hulks' HD in D&D or AD&D.

What i do know, however is that 99% of the BG2 Umber Hulks DO have less then 5 HitDice, and that these rare Umber Hulks that are immune to Cloudkill's SLAY effect are labled as 'regualr'. This leads me to believe that it is due to a bug, or just bad implementation in the game.

Last I recall, they are at least 6 HitDice. I am not an expert though, so I will wait for those well-versed in D&D lore to speak up and tell all.

I just checked with Google - and according to the Monsters Manual, Umber Hulks have 8+8 Hit Dice.

Not that i know what it means, though... :D

IIRC, 1 HitDice = 1d8

Ergo, an Umber Hulk can have 16-72 Hp( 72 Hp sounds about right for the game's Umber Hulks), and should be immuned to Cloudkill's instant-kill effects. Why the Game Developers made them vulnerable to Cloudkill, I do not know.

ADD] Just asked. For an Umber Hulk, they use d8 for their HitDice, so their HP ranges from 16-72 in PnP. I presume the game always uses the highest value, so 72 it is.
