Re: 1e Barbarian
Curious, I just actually checked it out and it turns out to be Icewind Dale: Heart of Darkness/Trials of the Luremaster, were the last 2e games put out.
I've just decided to add replaying all of these to my 'to-do' list for the year. :D |
Re: 1e Barbarian
Ha ha... 2e is definitely nice (not as good as 1e, but much better than 3e/4e).

Re: 1e Barbarian
I've played a bit of 4e now. It's not AD&D. It's just like one of those rip-offs that came out when AD&D was popular - similar but different in weird ways.
I think of 1e as Classic Coke, 2e as Coca Cola and 3.xe as New Coke. :D:D:D |
Re: 1e Barbarian
In the TOB expansion for BG2, two of the characters make a joke about 3e. I disremember the exact lines, but it something about how their respective races (avariel elf and halfing) can't do certain things.
It still shocks me that 4e came out as soon as it did. I was like "WTH? They can't have even finished putting out supplements for 3e yet!" Maybe I'm just getting old. |
Re: 1e Barbarian
Hasbro wanted more money. So, WotC fast-tracked a project that was supposed to come out in 2010. In some ways they shot themselves in the foot, because supplements for 3.5 were converted to 4 instead of releasing them twice, once for each as they did with a lot of 2e and 3.5 items.
That's why I like 1e. It's out of WotC and Hasbro's hands. :) There is just me and Uatu leading the charge with the help of everyone here. :ninjas: |
Re: 1e Barbarian
That's true - it's sort of nice that 1e is sort of "left alone" by the huge companies who control everything... Of course, we don't get much advertising as a result, but...
Plus, 1e is the "original," anyway - the others have the same name, but aren't the same. :) |
Re: 1e Barbarian
I was thinking about 1e being the original, and then about the basic D&D boxed sets. I can't remember at the moment which came first. :) Certainly, though, the majority of the 'basic' version of the game came after 1e.

Re: 1e Barbarian
Well, yeah, there was older D&D actually... but it, at least to me, feels a bit like it is still in the process of developing. The D&D boxed sets actually came a bit after 1e, I think (well, at least the ones I had), although older D&D was much like it. Not sure we want to go back to the days when demihumans were classes themselves, though... :D

Re: 1e Barbarian
I definitely do not want to go back that far. :) I was just trying to figure out if we could call this the original Dungeons & Dragons. :D:D:D
If the basic sets didn't start coming out until after AD&D... The 'Advanced' would seem to imply that it's not the first, unless the early stuff was hodge-podge, or as we'd call it these days - beta. :) Maybe when DC hits 1.0, we can go for ADC and basic DC. :ninjas: |
Re: 1e Barbarian
The really old D&D was those three really old books whose names I cannot remember... Well, the second was Greyhawk, maybe, and then the third was Blackmoor? It was really beta stage back then, although it is fun to see what they were thinking back in those days.
But yeah, a basic D&D or OD&D (original D&D as they call it) option for DC would be great for nostalgia... |
