On the subject of red lightsabers:

The Republic were the first to invent Lightsabers for their Jedi, and used naturally-occurring crystals to focus the blade (adegan crystals). These were often blue or green.

When the Republic and the Sith Empire came face to face, the Sith still used swords - alchemically-strengthened swords, mind you, swords that could resist a lightsaber, but still swords.

Once they'd gotten their hands on a few dead Jedi and looked at these lightsabers, they wanted their own - but the Sith Empire didn't have any planets in it upon which these focus crystals occurred. So, they had to use Sith alchemical know-how to create their own, artificial ones. These artificial lightsabers had red blades.

Just as taking an adegan crystal and learning to use it to aid one's focus of the Force is an important part of a Jedi's education, so is learning the alchemy and the focus to create a red crystal important for a Sith.
