/stat mode on
I guess I should add there there is no point making summary statistics from this thread if we are intending them to represent the forum as a whole. This, boys and girls, is what we statisticians refer to as a self selected survey. This is about as opposite to a random survey as you can get. Therefore the results will be skewed, perhaps in favour of the older, more sociable members of the group. (And me ;) /stat mode off However, as a cool, "getting to know you" thread, it is the best!! Perhaps the country information could come from members profile information then.
And I was being sarcastic when I posted my request......I think it would just take up too much of Moni's (or anyone's for that matter) time  Knip |
WELL, WELL. IF IT ISN'T THE NEPS...
Nice board you got here, folks, congratulations! I just joined your privileged club and would like to introduce myself: I'm a 23 year old mathematics student, usually from Germany, but for this year I am an alien, visiting the US. Compared to Germany, there aren't many nice places to go here (not counting the math faculty, they just serve tea-like coffe...), so I get to be in my appartment a lot. I study a lot, but even I can't do that the whole day, so I play (don't tell that's not a very logical conclusion... makes sense for me :)), only one game at a time. First I started StarCraft, but that's a pretty short game, so I de-dusted my wizardry archives and started 7, and just finished it before 8 came out. I hadn't heard of it before, I was soooo glad I had to buy two copies (fortunately my brother is a gamer, made a nice christmas present, even if he got it in the mid of january)!!! I found this board by a link from the surely well-known great site (Jandrall, and read me though quite lots before I deceided to come back regularly. I was pretty impressed how few people here abuse the anonymity of the web! My RPG history? Well, you all seem to know Realms of Arkania, and if I am not mistaken, it first appeared in Germany and was based on a pen-and-paper RPG named "The black eye". That's what I played with a bunch of weired friends (yes, they are still both friend and weired) for long years. Inbetween such stuff as Shining in the darkness or Phantasy Star on the mighty SegaSystem of my friend. Sure, Zelda on the Nintendo... I can't really remember when I played Wiz7 first, but I played pretty long. Without Internet at that time, I didn't get though it, never got the entrance to the last dungeon. However, coming to the US some month ago, I started again, and with the excellent work of Tom Needham I found my way though ... Am I the only one who screwed the girl and took the device? That really WAS a surprise when I started Wiz8... fortunately I safed often, so I just redid it, but then decided to make a new party... and then another one :) I'm not through yet, but good things... I enjoy reading all your posts, keep it up!!! Never forget your towels, friendly Philipp |
Hi@All
This is really a nice topic to show to people who always say that Iīm to old for still playing computer games ;) Ok, here my stats. Iīm 25 and living in a rather small city called "Ennepetal" near Wuppertal/Cologne. I Believe that Ennepetal sounds rather stupid for English speaking people ;) Iīm studying physic, and working on my diploma in medical imaging science. Getting to the "hot phase" at the momenat have to start writing the work in 3 month, so donīt have so much time to play (didnīt loaded Wiz8 for nearly a week now :( I think the first CRPG was BardsTale3, but didnīt played this for long, cause didnīt liked the userinterface, and my english in this times was not so good. I really loved eye of the beholder series, (except the ending of the first part, if someone can remember, was really a bit dissapointed, played for month and after the last monster killed only half a page of text) after that i think, i played the northland triology from DSA ("das schwarze auge", "the black eye"). Itīs a computer adaption from the pen/paper series from germany. Ok, then here is a good place to ask, is this rgp known elsewhere than germany?? menzoberanzan and ravenloft2 were also good rpgs. But when BardsTale and the other were released i was dissapointed from the ad&d sagas. so i searched the computer stores for other stuff and got a wizards & warriors and was rellay pleased, old layout withe new graphics. from w&w i found the ironworks forum and from there got to know about wiz8. (although nearly everyone has already mentioned, i really like this forum & the people using it) Think this is enough for the gaming part ;) I also read many fantasybooks (getting with the train to my university, so i have much time to read during the trainride) my favourite sagas are "wheel of time" from robert jordon "riftwar","krondor","snakewar" sagas from raymond feist "demon" and "crimson shadow" from salvatore ... hobbies is swimming and some fitness training in a studio (as compensation for the permanent sitting at an pc (in university and @home) and Moni, i like cats very much, have an lazy male cat (is ther another word in english? like "Katze/Kater" in german?). Would always prefer a cat than a dog, īcause dog have to sharp teath in my opinion. OK, think this is enough about my privacy ;) If someone really would like to know more, email me ;) p.s. Moni: You calculated the Mean & the Median, is this standard in USA or do you have something to do with statistics? & whatīs the new statistic? Did you, (or if not, would you be willing to) make a spreading of the forum users over the world, would be really interested in this, but have (as written above) not so much time to do so. so with regards & allways keep on gaming ;) Kay |
Hello, I guess it's my turn to introduce myself since I'm a lurker recently turned poster. My name is Greg and I'll be 29 on Saturday and am surely looking forward to my 50% off bill at the local steak house (with apologies to you vegetarians). I will have been married for two years in March, and have a dog and two cats. I was born and bred in Ann Arbor, Michigan, where I still reside (after a couple of short stints to the Washington D.C. area). I graduated with a BS History/Anthropology in 1996, and am thus employed as a network administrator. What, you didn't see that coming? I am currently taking 5 credit hours worth of web design/development classes in an effort to bring out my creative side and get the heck out of computer support and administration.
I started with RPGs in 1980 at the tender age of 7 when my brother's friend taught us how to play DnD. I still manage to play once every three or four weeks. My first CRPG was The Bard's Tale. I can still remember frothing over the back cover when my mom dragged me to the mall and I snuck off to Service Merchandise (remember that chain?). I actually saved up and bought my Commodore 64 for the sole purpose of playing BT. The next game on the list was Exodus: Ultima III. From there it was Might and Magic I, Wizardry (on a friend's Apple II and the when it was ported to the C64), Phantasy III, the SSI gold box games, Baldur's Gate and other Infinity engine games, and various other titles I don't remember as fondly. I didn't play Wiz 6 much, and even though I played Wiz 7 a ton I never finished it (I still have my wilderness map spread out over several architectural grade large graph paper sheets laying around somewhere). Anyway, I currently work for a University which 'shuts down' over the holidays, so I needed to get a new game to keep me occupied. I was ecstatic to see that Wizardry 8 had finally seen the light of day. Now I'm a complete addict (in my precious spare time) and am trying to juggle my desire to finish 8 and start from scratch in 6. Ah, nice problems to have no? Glad to be aboard, Greg |

But bragging about buying games which are obviously pirate copies wont make you very popular. *waits for the mods and vets here to fish slap him* |
I think the Russians have enough problems with affording games (same with alot of poorer countries). He should not brag about it, but paying our $50.00 for a game there may be a week's pay ($500 here?). I don't condone piracy, but a good game should be shared. There is not much of a sliding scale, so I think the software police should start in rich countries against piracy, in my opinion. Or go after mass unauthorized distributors who make alot of illegal money. This company (Sir-Tech) is nearly gone, from what I've heard. Let the masses enjoy! I pay full price, I don't mind paying a little extra to support those who can't afford it. My 2 cents. (Probably will be visited by men wearing black from MicroSoft soon...)

Hello, I would first like to thank everyone for all the help and great responses they have been very helpfull. I will be hitting the big 40 in a couple of weeks. I work as a Service Manager at a Ford dealership. I live in Cerritos, CA which is in Los Angeles County. I am having a great time with the game and since I only play about one time a week I sure it will keep me occupied for quite some time. I just wish we had a Wiz 9 to look forward too. LOL
