Re: Fall 2009 Design Contest
Hmm - I have started working on my first set of stairs (which I need for the contest mod) - as simple as possible in my case :D
Working for several hours today, I have only achieved one measly frame! (Plus, I have to do the going-down version afterwards... arrrgh.) I much rather like doing icons and small pics :D (Much faster gratification!) I am amazed that you guys have done so much in this department already... |
Re: Fall 2009 Design Contest
Well, there is an old saying that going down is easier than going up... and this is especially true for DC/FRUA stairs! :D

Re: Fall 2009 Design Contest
I have your templates for the rounded sewer walls and actually started on one, but it's for the City (different resolution and 3D viewport shape from my tutorial) so I haven't forgotten. :)
Ah the tutorial, I suppose at this point in the game, I should create the secret passage and trap first so I can create the tutorials. Then, even if I don't get the game done, I can still have done something that will (potentially) help others. I had actually thought about doing a demo instead of a playable game. I may still go this route, and then I can finish up the design at my leisure and release it when it's done. :) I can hunt up the link, but in one of the FRUA Newsletters, there's a demo for doing a demo that is not playable but is more like a movie. |

The stairs down are at least a billion times easier than the stairs up. :) Uatu, all I can say is that walls come faster with practice. I'm doing the stairs up by hand at twice the resolution as you and completed the nearby walls (A, B & E) in about an hour. Conversely, it took only about five minutes to do the whole wall for stairs down. :D |
Re: Fall 2009 Design Contest
Wow, that is fast! :D
Now that I have at least one frame ready, I guess I need the GIMP or something to do the farther frames (what do you guys use? I lost my ancient copy of Photoshop moving to Mac)... But yeah, I am definitely hoping that down is easier than up (in terms of DC, that is...)... :) (Maybe afterwards I will do some ladders... Those sound easy :D ) |

Today, I'm using Paint Shop Pro 6.02 and Photoshop 7. :) They're relatively old (10 years) but good. On my Linux boxes, I use the GIMP which lets me do everything that the first two do, plus some.
Here's the screenshot of my new stairway in use. I haven't applied any shading yet, and am not sure if I will, since I'm not using shading with these walls. |
Re: Fall 2009 Design Contest
I've been thinking about shading, too... (but I will probably avoid it, since it is just more work! :D)
Hmm - luckily for me, the GIMP seems to have Windows and Mac versions (which should I take, hmmmm...) - why did you choose to use Paint Shop Pro and Photoshop on your Windows box? Do they have some features that the GIMP does not? Nice staircase - gives a 3D feel to it (you can sort of see the 2nd floor!) with the ceiling hole effect. (I am going the spiral way, but not rounded...) |
Re: Fall 2009 Design Contest
For the GIMP, Windows and Linux versions work exactly alike.
Why do I use PSP and Photoshop? I bought PSP 10 years ago before the GIMP was around, so it's what I'm familiar with. We got Photoshop about 8 years ago and it has a couple of features that PSP doesn't. The GIMP has everything that the ones I bought have and then some. The GIMP was designed specifically to compete with Photoshop, originally for use on Linux and Unix only which Adobe does not support. I'm working on finishing the stairs now. :) |
Re: Fall 2009 Design Contest
Hmm - I guess I just have to choose whether to work on my Mac or (virtual) Windows, then... Hmmmmm...
