There are 8 character slots, so you can have up to 7 NPCs - and you meet a fair few of them throughout the game. Don't expect any interaction though, they are just extra cannon fodder LOL. You can also buy packmules (very useful to carry the gazillion magic items you'll find) although they take up a slot each. I currently have 6 characters and 2 packmules.
